What the GPS can do on a fence line, and how to do better.

Some error, always

A phone's GPS always carries some error, more under trees and near buildings. Walk in the open with the phone in your hand, and wait for the signal before you tap Start.

Exact sides

For exact sides, draw on the satellite map; stand still at a corner and use Add my position to average its position; or type the length you measured with the tape in Side lengths and bearings, in the ⋮ menu of the map.

Screen off

A walk keeps measuring with the screen off. If your phone stops it to save battery, open Measuring with the screen off in Settings.
